First, I disagree with the name. @RevolutionSyria may be understood as if the person or group bearing that name represents the bulk of the revolution in Syria. However, nobody represents it yet (which may be part of its difficulties, by the way,) so spare me the pompous name.

Second, I disagree with the intention as announced in the Arabic part of the title of their Facebook page which translates into "The Syrian Revolution Against Bashar Al-Assad". I am no fan of the man who lost many reform opportunities and was appointed rather than elected. Having said that, a revolution cannot be defined by what it opposes but by its objectives. Also, why single out Al-Assad when there is a whole gang acting as if the country is its own farm?

Third, @RevolutionSyria tweets this today:

تلغي حالة الطوارئ نهائياً والقانون الذي أجازها لا أن تعلّق العمل بها فقط،

تعلن حلّ المؤسسات التي أفرزتها تلك الحالة،

تعفو عن جميع سجناء الرأي والسجناء السياسيين وتأمر بإخراجهم إلى الحرية فوراً،

تعلن الحداد الرسمي على شهداء سورية الذين سقطوا وهم يطالبون بالإصلاح وتوجِّه باعتقال مغتاليهم ومحاكمتهم،

تحدث في الحكومة الجديدة وزارةً لمكافحة الفساد والاحتكارات،

تطلق استشارات لتشكيل لجنة مهمتها صياغة دستور جديد لا يمنح حزباً، أيَّ حزبٍ، مكانة القيادة في المجتمع والدولة،

تقترح جدولاً زمنياً للاستفتاء الدستوري وللانتخابات التشريعية.

اليوم الخطاب المرتقب، والخطاب كلمات، والكلمات تتجسّد أفعالاً، ودماء الشهداء تناديك أن تفعل.

Bernard-Henri Lévy a fait publier récemment un article qualifiant la campagne BDS de "saloperie". Bernard-Henri manie le verbe avec une dextérité telle que le mot "saloperie" prend une dimension intellectuelle inédite.

La plupart des commentaires étaient positifs. Béchamel (euh, "BHL) a ses fans, bien sûr. J'ai envoyé, à trois reprises, un commentaire poli et ferme signalant mes points principaux de désaccord mais il n'a pas été publié. J'en conclus, comme je l'ai fait en regardant certains débats auxquels ledit "philosophe" a participé, que le Béchamel a une horreur absolue du rationnel. Voici donc mon commentaire, dans mon blog, et je laisse qui de droit juger :

Lévy entend par "marchandise juive".

Il est surtout drôle de lire l'auteur prétendre que le boycott d'Israël "contrevient, en effet, aux usages, règles et lois du droit international..." En matière de droit international, les défenseurs des politiques israéliennes feraient mieux d'examiner le respect par ces politiques du droit international. Israël a systématiquement violé ce droit, résolutions du Conseil de sécurité (242, 476, 478, 487...) et Conventions de Genève inclus.

Enfin, Bernard-Henri Lévy pourrait-il apporter la moindre preuve de son accusation contre Ali Abunimah de "comparer Israël à l'Allemagne nazie" ?

Un peut d'honnêteté intellectuelle serait la bienvenue. >>

The two main US military engagements (both failed already, if you ask me - or even if you don't) are nowhere to be mentioned today (August 25, 2008) among the top stories on the most mainstream site of the most mainstream US TV channel - "mainstream" at least for viewers outside the US.

Oh yes, there's a little title hidden somewhere about Jill Carroll, but she is one of "us", and the whole affair is really old news.

Apart from lip service to "our boys out there", the benefits of "liberation" and the "insufficient armour", do you want to bet that Iraqis and Afghans will not be among the themes of the US presidential campaign?

Something else missing? What about other parties and candidates?

To Those Who Accuse "Syria" - Who Are Fatah Al-Islam?

Far be it from me to defend a regime which, I believe, should go, but the accusations already thrown at "Syria" (meaning the Syrian regime, I suppose) call for a reminder that while fighting for a cause - democracy in Syria, in that case - we should keep in mind that not every accusation can be used in support of that cause. Unfounded finger-pointing is not only counterproductive, it is morally unacceptable.

Here's an excerpt from it which should be sobering:

Alastair Crooke, who spent nearly thirty years in MI6, the British intelligence service, and now works for Conflicts Forum, a think tank in Beirut, told me, “The Lebanese government is opening space for these people to come in. It could be very dangerous.” Crooke said that one Sunni extremist group, Fatah al-Islam, had splintered from its pro-Syrian parent group, Fatah al-Intifada, in the Nahr al-Bared refugee camp, in northern Lebanon. Its membership at the time was less than two hundred. “I was told that within twenty-four hours they were being offered weapons and money by people presenting themselves as representatives of the Lebanese government’s interests—presumably to take on Hezbollah,” Crooke said.

The largest of the groups, Asbat al-Ansar, is situated in the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp. Asbat al-Ansar has received arms and supplies from Lebanese internal-security forces and militias associated with the Siniora government.

In 2005, according to a report by the U.S.-based International Crisis Group, Saad Hariri, the Sunni majority leader of the Lebanese parliament and the son of the slain former Prime Minister—Saad inherited more than four billion dollars after his father’s assassination—paid forty-eight thousand dollars in bail for four members of an Islamic militant group from Dinniyeh. The men had been arrested while trying to establish an Islamic mini-state in northern Lebanon. The Crisis Group noted that many of the militants “had trained in al-Qaeda camps in Afghanistan.”

According to the Crisis Group report, Saad Hariri later used his parliamentary majority to obtain amnesty for twenty-two of the Dinniyeh Islamists, as well as for seven militants suspected of plotting to bomb the Italian and Ukrainian embassies in Beirut, the previous year. (He also arranged a pardon for Samir Geagea, a Maronite Christian militia leader, who had been convicted of four political murders, including the assassination, in 1987, of Prime Minister Rashid Karami.) Hariri described his actions to reporters as humanitarian.

In an interview in Beirut, a senior official in the Siniora government acknowledged that there were Sunni jihadists operating inside Lebanon. “We have a liberal attitude that allows Al Qaeda types to have a presence here,” he said. He related this to concerns that Iran or Syria might decide to turn Lebanon into a “theatre of conflict.”

As a result:

Your children are not considered Syrian by the Powers that be. Some Syrian law says so (but not the Syrian constitution which bans such discrimination.)
Your children will need a visa whenever you decide to go back to Syria to see the family.

Isn't that strage? The law considers you a second class citizen, but you will still be encouraged, not to say required, to vote for the only candidate out there. He had seven full years to restore some dignity to you but did not do so.

Should you vote?
No one but you can answer.

While the Municipality of the City of Damascus and the Ministy of Culture were taking a leave from their responsibilities by approving what came to be known as the King Faisal Street Project (or the KFSP), the city itself kept rotting more each day.

The KFSP seems to be halted for the moment. Isn't it time for the Municipality, the Ministry and "Maktab Anbar" to suggest a plan to save the old city instead of building malls in the air for imaginary tourists and investors?

For the record, I took this picture in January 2007. This house is in the "Street Called Straight". I don't know to whom it belonged or belongs and what is going to become of it. What I do know, however, is that it should be renovated.

What can we do? Any suggestions?

Unknown Syrian - Part 4: At Last, His Name

The Unknown Syrian is Moussa Abadi (1910 - 1997), native of the Jewish quarter of Damascus.

Helped by his French friend and future wife, Odette Rosenstock, he founded a network in the region of Nice, known as the "réseau Marcel", which saved 527 Jewish children from being deported by the Nazis. The network benefited from the protection and the help given by the Bishop of Nice, Paul Rémond.

There is quite a lot about Moussa Abadi on the Web. Why don't we share that information?

The title says: "Hezbollah warns Muslims to flee Haifa"

The secondary title says: "Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah on Wednesday warned all Israeli Arabs to leave the port city of Haifa so the militant group could step up attacks without fear of shedding the blood of fellow Muslims."

The text of the news item quotes Hassan Nasrallah as saying: "I have a special message to the Arabs of Haifa, to your martyrs and to your wounded: I call on you to leave this city. I hope you do this. ... Please leave so we don't shed your blood, which is our blood."

My comment:

The quite accurate translation of Nasrallah's speech does not make any difference between Muslims and Christians (or Jews for that matter!) He is addressing the "Arabs of Haifa", so why did the secondary title talk about "the blood of fellow Muslims"? Why did the title talk about "warning Muslims"? Does CNN know the difference between Arab and Muslim? Note that the orignial AP wire, by Joseph Panossian, was titled "Nasrallah urges Arabs to Leave Haifa". It can be found here ( http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/M/MIDEAST_FIGHTING_NASRALLAH?SITE=MAQUI&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT ) but may join the archives soon and become inaccessible. The first paragraph of that wire, though, still mentions the "blood of fellow Muslims" which does not belong to Nasrallah's speech.

Conclusion: CNN seems to have changed the title deliberately. Is it to blur the picture a little further for its readers?

I spoke earlier to retired Brigadier General David Grange, who's also a CNN military analyst. And I began by asking him about General Abizaid's belief that Hezbollah wants nuclear weapons.

COOPER: What do you the likelihood of that really is?

My comment:

Cooper takes what "is possible to imagine" and turns it into a near-certainty by moving from the general statement about "militias or terrorist organizations" to "Chemical, biological or nuclear being transferred to a group like Hezbollah." Let's keep in mind that General Abizaid represents an army which was not even able to find such weapons in Iraq! Well, not only do such claims remain phony because there has never been evidence to Hezbollah's desire to acquire such weapons, but there have been reports about Israel using phosphorus bombs in Lebanon during the current conflict. They should be investigated.

Gem 2: Cooper becomes more Gillermanish than Gillerman himself

Excerpt:

COOPER: When you really listen to these speeches that Nasrallah has given in the past, I mean, it's a speech that an Adolph Hitler could have given, I mean essentially these guys are Islamic fascists. And then you hear the president of Iran talking about essentially a final solution against the state of Israel and you compare that to suddenly seeing Hezbollah flags in Trafalgar Square and demonstrations. Do you feel like the world understands what Hezbollah is really all about?

GILLERMAN: I certainly hope the world understands because this war is not just about the safety of Israel or the freedom of Lebanon, it is about preserving civilization as we know it. When...

My comment:

Adolf Hitler, no less? For all I know, Nasrallah's speech was neither agressive nor anti-Jewish/anti-semitic. He was firm, indeed, but he was clear as to his intention of stopping the shelling of Israel as soon as Israel stops shelling the Lebanese. His threat of shelling Tel Aviv was conditional, i.e. he would do it only if Israel pursued the shelling of Beirut. And where did the term "Islamic fascists" come from? Anderson is borrowing this from neocon litterature, isn't he? Does he know the definition of the word "fascism"? Does he know the difference between "Islamic" and "Islamist"? Hezbollah's flags in London bother him? But isn't that freedom of expression? Finally, would Anderson Cooper say, for instance, that Olmert is a "Zionist fascist" because Beirut is being shelled and Lebanese civilians are being murdered by the hundreds?

What is clear is that Anderson Cooper is no more an anchor than I am a sports champion. He has just transformed himself into an instrument for Israeli propaganda.

New Series: Adopt a UN Resolution

On the menu of most news outlets, cynicism seems to be the "day's special" during this season of war on Gaza and Lebanon. Israeli and US cynicism, in particular, is served in think slices, king-size chunks, and generous heaps. Just watch the Israeli Ambassador to the UN when he mentions UN Security Council Resolution 1559, or listen to George Bush Junior as he, among all people, talks about the need to comply with that famous Resolution.

Since we are on the subject of UN resolutions, why stop at 1559? Why not go back to 242? 338? 476? Why not examine UN General Assembly resolutions which, although non-binding, clarify the legal framework of the conflict? After all, it was a UN General Assembly resolution that gave Israel its international legitimacy.

If I were a UN resolution on the Middle East, I would really feel abandoned, out in the cold, and in search of somebody to mention me and to love me.
If I were a UN resolution on the Middle East, I would need to be understood.
If I were a UN resolution on the Middle East, I would need to be listened to.

Unknown Syrian - Part 3: The lives he saved

First, here is another photograph of the man and his wife, Odette. The picture was taken in Nice, France, in 1947.

Now, what about the children whose lives were saved by them?

It is estimated that 527 Jewish children survived the Third Reich's occupation of Nice thanks to "Monsieur Marcel" and "Sylvie", the nicknames used by the "unknown Syrian" and the woman who became his wife later. "Marcel" and "Sylvie" found French families who hosted the children between 1942 and 1944 away from the eyes of the Gestapo.

Unknown Syrian - Part 2: More information

OK, by giving so little information, I may have been a bit nasty. Sorry. OK, here are more details which, I am afraid, will not be of much more help. However, the extraordinary story of that Unknown Syrian is worth the patience, believe me. Anyway, here we go:

Our man was born in 1910 and died in 1997. He spent his childhood and teenage in Damascus, then left for France where he lived until his death.

He studied medieval theatre history at the Sorbonne (University of Paris.)

The portrait of him which I included in my earlier message (part 1) was taken in France in 1948.

He was neither a politician nor a military.

He is not a well-known figure in Syria, and only theatre specialists in France know his name.

He saved lives indeed but when? Where and how? That is going to be partly revealed in part 3.

"مَن هو ميليس" كَمِثال

كَم دُهشت أنا القارئ المواظب لِنشرة "كلّنا شركاء" عندما اطّلعتُ على مقال خالد خزعل "من هو ميليس" في عددها الصّادر في 16 تشرين الثاني 2005. و لَم أكن لأهتمَّ بالمقال لولا أنّه وَرَدني مِراراً منذ ذلك التاريخ مِن أصدقاءٍ عديدين أثلج صدورَهم ما بدا كتعرِيَةٍ لنوايا دتلِف ميلِس عبر كشفٍ منهجيٍّ لتاريخ الرّجُل و لنواياه.

المآخذ على مقال "مَن هو ميليس"

لقد عثرتُ على أخطاء كثيرة وقع فيها نصُّ خالد خزعل مضموناً و أسلوباً هاكُم عيِّنات منها صنّفتُها في ثلاث فئات.

ا – بعض التواريخ لا أساس لها من الصّحّة، فالكاتب يصف عام 1947 بأنّه "سنة النكسة وقيام الكيان الصهيوني" و معلومٌ أنّ ما نسمّيه النّكسة هو هزيمة حزيران 1967 لا إعلان دولة إسرائيل، ثُمّ إنّ تلك الدّولة لم تقم في سنة 1947 و إنّما في سنة 1948 الّتي اصطُلح على تسميتها سنة النّكبة. و المضحك في الأمر أن دتلف ميلِس من مواليد عام 1949 حسب جميع المصادر و منها موسوعة الإنترنت ويكيبيديا [1] أي بَعد العام الّذي يزعم المقال أنّ ميلِس ولِد فيه بسنتين.

ب – مصادر المقال على ندرتها غير موثوقة. فمثلاً لا يورِد خالد خزعل في مقاله أيّ مصدرٍ يدعم مزاعمه عن طفولة القاضي و شبابه ولا يستشهد إلاّ بجملةٍ يتيمةٍ ينسبها إلىدتلف ميلِس يتحدّث فيها عن كرش أبيه المنتفخ تاركاً إيّانا حائرين في صحّة ذلك الاستشهاد و في علاقة الكرش المُشار إليه بالتّحقيق في مَقتل رفيق الحريري. أمّا زَعم خالد خزعل عن يهوديّة أمّ ميلِس و عن مصرَعها على الجبهة السّوريّة في خلال حرب عام 1967 فقَد فنّده المعنيّ بنفسه عندما بيَّن أنّ أمَّه مسيحيّةٌ ما زالت حيّةً تُرزق في برلين مُثبِتاً بذلك أَنْ لا أساسَ لتلك القصّة. و بذلك يَسقُط أيضاً ما رواه كاتب المقال عن زيارة ميلِس قبرَ أمه في هضبة الجولان "بمروحية تابعة للجيش الإسرائيلي" ليُصلّي لها "صلاة المسيحية لا أدري أم يهودية".

و تجنُّباً لإساءة الظّن بالسّيّد خزعل بَحَثتُ عن وثيقةٍ رُبما استخدمَها تُطابِق مزاعمَه عن والدة دتلف ميلِس فعثرتُ على إشاراتٍ إلى مقالٍ كانت قد نشرَته "الجمهوريّة" المصريّة يدّعي فيه كاتبه أنّ المذكورة يهوديّة ساندت الصّهيونيّة و أنّ رصاصة قنّاصٍ سوريٍّ نَقلَتها إلى العالَم الآخر في 1967. ولكنّي لم أعثر على أيّ مصدرٍ يسبقُ "الجمهوريّة" ممّا يرجّح احتمال اختلاقها لتلك القصّة اختلاقاً، و لعلّ خالد خزعل نَقَل عنها بكثيرٍ من التصرُّف.

إن بُطلان بعض مزاعم المقال يلقي بظلال الشّكّ على أغلب ادّعاءاته المتبقّية من علاقة أبي ميلِس بالماسونيّة إلى إسهام الابن في صياغة اتّفاقات أوسلو مروراً بالوسام الذي منحه موشي دايان للأمّ، و لستُ هنا في معرض التحقيق المفصَّل في مزاعم كان من واجب كاتبها أن يدعمَها هو.

أمّا الشّعرة الّتي قصمت ظهر البعير فهي إقحام "بروتوكولات صهيون"، و ظنّي أن خالد خزعل قصَدَ "بروتوكولات حكماء صهيون"، في الموضوع مع أنّ المؤرّخين تُجمِع أغلبيّتهم السّاحقة على أنّ ذلك الكتاب مُلفَّق من ألِفه إلى يائه [2]، و أضعفُ الإيمان ألاّ يَستشهد المرء بمرجعٍ مشكوكٍ فيه إلى ذلك الحدّ.

ج – يحفل المقال بعددٍ من الأخطاء اللغويّة يجعل القارئ يشكّ في أنّ الكاتب له أيّ باعٍ في التحقيقاتٍ الصحفيّة إذ أنّ سبقاً صحفيّاً من نوع إماطة اللثام عن تاريخ قاضٍ معروف لا بُدّ أن يمرَّ بأكثر من مراجعةٍ قبل أن يُنشَر، فكيف بقيَت هذه العثرات كلّها؟ كيف يعود ميلِس إلى ألمانيا "مشتكياً إلى أباه" بدلاً من أن يعود "مشتكياً إلى أبيه"؟ و لِمَ "انتقل أباه للجانب الغربي من ألمانيا" في حين يُقال "انتقل أبوه إلى الجانب الغربي من ألمانيا"؟ و هل تَخرّج من مدرسة الحقوق محامياً "ناقماً على قتلة أمه السوريون" أَم "ناقماً على قتلة أمه السوريين" بِغَضّ النظر عن أنّها ما زالت حيّة؟

هل من سبيلٍ إلى تجنُّب نشر المقالات المضلِّلة؟

إنّ مَبعثَ دهشتي الحقيقيّ ليس الأخطاءَ الكثيرة الّتي وقع فيها نصُّ خالد خزعل بِقَدر ما هو قبول "كلّنا شركاء" نشره بالشّكل الذي جاء عليه. إنّ من يحرِص مثلي على انتشار الإعلام السّوريّ الحرّ، أعْني المستقلّ عن الجريدة الوطنيّة الرّسميّة الثّلاثيّة "الثّورة/البعث/تشرين"، يُدرِك أنّ على ذلك الإعلام اليافع أن يَجهد يوميّاً للحفاظ على مصداقيّته كمِنبرٍٍ لا يشوبه ما شاب الصّحافةَ الرّسميّة من خطاباتٍ فارغةٍ و ادّعاءاتٍ لا سنَدَ لها. و انطلاقاً من قناعتي تلك و من إيماني بأنّ نشرة "كلّنا شركاء" تجربةٌ رائدةٌ في هذا المجال يجب أن تنموَ بفضل سمعةٍ مبنيّةٍ على الجدّيّة دَعوني أتقدّم بثلاثة اقتراحات:

أوّلاً – أن تتحقّق نشرة "كلّنا شركاء" منهجيّاً من محتوى التّحقيقات الواردة إليها قبل إرسالها إلى القرّاء، و أقصد هنا المقالات الّتي يتوخّى كاتبوها الكشف عن معلوماتٍ لا مقالات الرأي. و تجنُّباً لإلقاء عبءٍ جديد على كتفَي الأخ أيمن عبد النّور لِمَ لا تُشكَّل لجنةٌ من القرّاء لمراجعة هذه التّحقيقات؟ أنا متطوّعٌ منذ الآن!

ثانياً – أن تُرفق نشرة "كلّنا شركاء" كلّ تحقيقٍ يأتي بزَعمٍ مشكوك فيه و تَعذَّر التأكُّد منه بتعليقٍ يوضح ذلك و ينصح القارئ بالحذر، و قد لاحظتُ أنّ النّشرة بدأَت فعلاً بإضافة هذا النّوع من التّعليقات كما فَعلَت في عددها المؤرَّخ 19 كانون الثّاني 2006 تذييلاً لمزاعم عن جمال دانيال.

ثالثاً – أن ينشرَ السيّد خالد خزعل اعتذاراً عن مقالِه المضلِّل. ففضلاً عن أنّ الذّمَّ على أُسسٍ ركيكةٍ ليس بديلاً لتحليلٍ رصينٍ لتقرير ميلِس الذي أرى فيه من الفرضيات الواهنة و التهافت ما يكفي للطعن بمهنيَّة ذلك القاضي التي طُبِّل لها و زُمِّر، مَنحَ مقالُ خالد خزعل أبواقَ الدّعاية صّهيونيّة الهوى فرصةً ذهبيّةً للتشهير بالسّوريّين و للزّعم أنّهم سُذَّجٌ يصدّقون أيّ نظريّة مؤامرةٍ مِحورها دتلف ميلِس و يكرهون تلقائيّاً كلّ ما هو يهوديّ [3].

خِتاماً آمَل أن نسهم جميعاً، صحفيّين و أصحاب رأي و قرّاء، في أن يُتابع الإعلام السّوريّ المستقلّ مسيرتَه الشّجاعة، فنحن بحاجةٍ إليه نظيفاً جادّاً أكثر من أيّ وقتٍ مضى.

A Non-Nuclear Solution Thanks to a Nuclear Resolution

With all the talk about Iran's nuclear programme and the alleged threat of Iran's nuclear ambitions, it seems to me useful to have, and spread, some background information which would allow people to view the issue in its legal context.

Indeed, one of the most interesting UN Security Council resolutions remains unmentioned, even by Iranian officials, although it could offer a basis for a denuclearisation solution for the Middle East. I am referring here to United Nations Security Council Resolution 487 of 19 June 1981. It was voted after Israeli warplanes destroyed an Iraqi nuclear facility.

Noting that "Israel has not adhered to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons", the resolution, among other decisions, "calls upon Israel urgently to place its nuclear facilities under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency." UNSC Resolution 487 was adopted unanimously. In other words, the US voted for it.

Twenty four years after the adoption of UNSC Resolution 487, Israel keeps violating it. Nothing and nobody can make Israel feel how urgent "urgently" is although United Nations Security Council Resolutions are binding.

I think that this is a subject worth brining up. If Israel complies with Resolution 487, would not this encourage Iran to place its own nuclear facilities under the safegards of the IAEA? Just wondering.

Born Again

It seems that George Bush Junior is a born-again Christian. Whatever that really means, this is what the man himself claims to be in his autobiography-style book "A Charge to keep" (see chapter 10 of the book if you can stand it.)

A thought crosses my mind: Rather than being born again, wouldn't it have been more natural, more straightforward, more time saving, and more beneficial for Bush Junior to simply grow up?

كلّما سمعتُ فيروز تغنّي "تنذكِر ما تنعاد ، و نشوفَك بالأعياد" لا أدري لماذا أتخيَّل أنّها تخاطب جنديّاً سوريّاً.
ثمّ تتابع "بسّ انساني" ولكن كيف يكون ذلك وسط التّلاسن و الضغوط و المسائل العالقة؟
في نهاية المطاف ستكون هناك دولتان متكافئتان تحتاج كلّ منهما الأخرى فهل تعقِلان؟
