So this is how to respond, isn't it? If someone attacks you, punish them by preventing your citizens from access to education and culture! Where do they find such brilliant ideas?

On Syria news, two hours later he was laughing and smiling to Britin FM and agreeing with him that it SAD to SEE such Act by the Americans?
What a comody showing their real face that they know all the facts that they can not doing anything about it but they have to pretend that they are MEN.
But we know they are MEN on their people ONLY.

Oops, you forgot to mention the other comedian, the Syrian Ambassador to Britin, he said that he is waiting for explanation from the US.
Waiting, waiting waiting ....
Good people wait and wait ...

Do they think that the spit in our mouth has dried out, we just holding it

Free the prisoners mother fuckers, you might find someone has some balls.

I didn't know about the "waiting for explnanations" bit. That is really going too far.

While I understand that the Syrian army wasn't ready to prevent such an attack, and that the Syrian government doesn't want to jeopardise its political gains by either opening its borders with Iraq or kicking out some US official, I still don't understand Muallem's gratuitous "As long as you are saying if, I tell you, if they do it again, we will defend our territories." Well, I tell you, they will not.

The real questions remain:
- Could the Syrian government have done anything after such an attack?
- If yes, what?

The Syrian army is there and ready, but they know that they can not fire a bullet on those invaders and they were playing with the fire since 2005 when they told the American please please talk to us and then we will control the boarder 100% but since you are not talking to us we can not defend the boarder more than 70%. Defending the boarder means killing the fighters who ever they are, Syrians or foreigners. That was their message since 2003. The time they said that we wont do it 100% they admitted guilt to their neighbor and they become responsible for all the hundreds of thousands killed in Iraq.
There were always double message, on one hand we are the defender of the Arab Nationalism on the other hand working with the empire and submitting to it but not fully, in a time where the killings was in millions, what nationalism they are talking about?
Not “fully” does not make of you a hero.

“Could the Syrian government have done anything after such an attack?”

Yes they could. Stop Bragging and showing force on your people in the name of pressure on your regime; the pressure is not on the regime the pressure is on the regime behavior, which the country is paying big price for it.

They could react like any moderate Arab State and stop calling others cowards and call themselves braves and the defenders of Arab Land and Arab Dignity. They are like any other Arab Country. They are not differ from Qatar who host the American Army. They know it and they still keep bragging and talking bigger than their size. They keep getting those silly political gains like we talked to the American. Rice met with our Foreign minister and sending their elites to Washing begging AIPAC to meet with them, and at the same time they still sell their street the milk of nationalism and Arabism. What frustrate me their double face and their treatment to their people. They do not deserve anyone sympathy because they are doing it on their own. Their people in one mountain and they on another. Their people who only asking just to talk and have opinion in all of that are in prison and they are the thinkers, the planners, the executer, the money collectors and this is has gone for too long.

The biggest lies are their investigations, how many ones so far, and they keep things hiding, so when we will see one investigation coming to light?

I can give the Syrian government the certificate of “Stupidity” honor degree. Now, let suppose the USA government has carried out the same stupidity and closed all Arabic Schools in the USA (5000 schools). There are more than 1200 mosque till 2002 in the USA. All of them have schools and there are ten times this number as Arabic School, so let’s assume the total only 5000.

Then who is the looser if USA carried the same action, are they the Nationalist who call for Arabism and who prevent Arabic schools from opening in the imperialist land or their enemies are the winners.

The other fact is, American School in Damascus is added value to the Damascenes to investors and to the children of the Officials. Now who is loosing when they close the school.
The American Cultural Center is not a making money place; they are spending money to add value to the Damascene society, who is the looser if it is closed.

The Case goes back to 1964, the Baathist did the same thing and closed and looted the center and they fed the population with the propaganda against the Imperialist who are begging to shake hands with.

Closing the school and the center goes with what Bush is advocating to boycott Syria, and goes against the regime in Syria who is striving to approach the USA and begging to left sanctions and work with them, who is the winner this way.

The big losers are the children and the parent of these children, but watch my words; the Syrian government will back off its decision and will hide this file in some dossier.
And like my wife said that Damascene proverb: Chicken dug, dusted its head. “جاجة حفرت عاراسها غبرت”

Umnia,

Sorry, I'm answering in English... May be it's the influence of the American Cultural Centre. No, seriously, only because most of the thread is in English.

The culture of any country, or that that its government "exports", has both good and bad.

Let's not forget that Syrians who learn or speak English can go to the American and British cultural centres to read books (superficial or deep,) get help (albeit limited) for their studies abroad, participate in theatre clubs, watch films (good or bad, again,) etc.

As for the American School, while it reflects and deepens social gaps (and that's a separate problem,) it still manages to give very good education to a few lucky Syrian children.

Admittedly, employees of the Amercian Cultural Centre, the American School, and the British Council, are sometimes rude and feel superior. However, embassy employees are far worse, bordering on racism and stereotyping from time to time. Well, why not kick out the US Consul for good measure? I know the answer: The Syrian regime cannot afford that.

To add to the humiliation, this is exactly what a simple Syrian woman, Majd Tabbaa, wife of the owner of Oxygen (a restaurant in old Damascus) did back in 2002 ( http://www.lebanonwire.com/0205/02052415DS.asp or http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m3190/is_/ai_85932684 )

Well, the governmant can't even do that. They can try something else, may be, but they prefer the easy way: closing culture and education outlets. Weapon of the helpless?

In my opinion, if there are problems with the Centre and the School, they should be treated separately from the issue of the recent agression.

P.S.: Thanks for the compliment about my choice of that word. I took it from a scientific publication.

there is no question that any culture council or school should be out of the political issue.

but i think u already know the kind of the cultural service the american council is presenting. i don't think by closing it, ppl are going to get deprived from an important spot of light in damascus.
beside most of the american school's students are canadians or americans. very few are syrians.

i'm not defending what the syrian gonvernment has done, coz as u said they should have , if they had any blood runing in their faces , done this to the embassodor.

but to tell me that these two building areمنفذ للعلم والمعرفة؟
u know and i know that they are not

regards

Hello again Umnia,

We agree on the basic premise that the council or school should have been kept out of it, and that the Syrian government should have reacted with the Embassy or by other means.

Let's not exaggerate: First, I don't know really the recent cultural services of the American Centre, but I have memories of books, films, etc. a long time ago. I remember a couple of very good films, but that goes back more than ten years in time. Second, I don't think that it's a beacon of light in an otherwise culturally dark place. After all, there is a remarkable cultural activity in Syria with or without the Center.

(However, since you mentioned the British Council in your first post in this thread, I can tell you from a recent visit there that I was rather impressed with the book collection and with the current effort to form a theatre club for its Syrian students.)

When I talked about access to culture and education, perhaps I should have said it was one limited point of access out of many. For one thing, I know that the few lucky children who to the American School get good education (but bad social integration,) which makes it an access point for those chosen few. Anyway, why am I arguing? Trying to quantify its importance or not is beyond my purpose and reach. We do agree on the essentials, don't we?

Good morning GS

i wasn't exaggerating. i don't know much about both the (BC and AC) now. but i don't think they are doing any better.
could you think of a simple vision of a " cultural council" which belong to two major countries like USA and UK?
i as well used to study in the BC , long time ago and they didn't use to make any cultural services or activities, not to mention that the course fees which was taught by unqualified teachers was like 10 thousands, just because they are "native speakers".
If I wanted to use the cultural "service" they had , I had to pay. If i to sit in the library which contained few unvalued books, i had to pay another 1000? the internet was not for free.

on the other hand I remember Cervantas for ex, this small old building at that time used to make galleries, music parties . there was a big library for free, far more important books..not to mention that the course was for 2500 with teachers working as lecturers at the college as well.

I don't think I'm exaggerating if I consider their services as استهبال) ): do I have because they present few books and few films, to consider them a spot of culture in Damascus? i think the students are offering them far more important cultural services , when they take each one for a tour in the city!! and I'm sure they do it for free.

As for now , I know for sure that they won't offer anything for free, even this theatre club, do u think they did this coz they cared to do it? actually I think they are widening their cultural activities coz of the cultural movement in the city. beside the fees they are taking now is a disaster.
